Historic City with a Modern Culture:

Spokane , the cultural center of the Inland Northwest, is a mid-size city (metropolitan population: 418,000) with small-town atmosphere but big city amenities and culture. The city hosts more than 80 arts organizations, spotlighted by the Spokane Symphony, the Spokane Civic Theater, Ballet Spokane, and the Northwest Museum of Culture and Arts.

The character of downtown Spokane is turn-of-the-century architecture, such as the exquisitely restored 1914 Davenport Hotel and soaring 1902 Clocktower, intertwined with the modern architectural lines of the Opera House and Convention Center. The Spokane River winds through the city and is bordered by 100-acre Riverfront Park, an area of broad swathes of green lawn, river walkways, and a fascinating 1909 carousel of whirling horses, tigers, and giraffes.

Outdoor Activities in the Gateway to the Rocky Mountains:

national forestsOpportunities abound for outdoor activities in this gateway to the Rocky Mountains, where pine trees and lava cliffs dominate the landscape. The rushing waters of Spokane Falls can be heard in the very heart of the city and just 15 minutes from downtown is a 10,000 acre nature preserve, Riverside State Park. The Spokane River Centennial Trail meanders 37-miles from the center of the city at Riverfront Park, through the nature preserve, and then on to north Idaho.

In a radius of 50 miles of the city, there are 76 lakes for swimming, boating, and fishing. Two National Forests extend north of the city all the way to the Canadian border. Mount Spokane and Chewelah Mountain (49° North) provide great skiing as well as countless trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and camping.

Within about a 6-hour drive from Spokane, a traveler can fish for salmon in the Pacific Ocean, ski at the renown Baniff ski resort in British Columbia, camp in Glacial National Park in Montana, or hike along the incredibly deep Hell's Canyon on the Idaho-Oregon border.

Excellent Climate and Pristine Environment:

climate sunshineSpokane enjoys 260 days of sunshine per year, receives less than 17 inches of rain per year, and has exceptional air quality. Spokane was one of the four largest cities in the nation to be awarded an "A" by the American Lung Association for superior air quality in 2003. In the last 8 years (since records have been kept), Spokane has had zero days in the warning level for air pollution.

In an era when much of the western United States has been plagued by drought, the Spokane area is blessed with an abundance of pristine water. Geologically, the region is situated on Miocene plateau basalt overlain by glacial till - materials which form an excellent rechargeable aquifer for the entire Inland Northwest.
