He was born in Mexico, New York, and while residnet there, lived in the house on Church Street, owned in 1923 by Miss Grace Becker.
In his early life, Charles showed a pioneer spirit, for in the 1850's he travelled to California and Nevada, via the Isthmus of Panama, engaging in gold mining and other pioneer pursuits. He was in the then Far West for seven years. Upon his reurn to New York, he became a salesman for the Dunn-Salmon boot and shoe firm of Syracuse, travelling around central New York State. He remained in this position for over 25 years. He moved to Rochester about 1893, and acquired the Rochester Candy Works, in association with Albert S. Colebrook. He was also a director of the Atlantic Stamping Company.
He was a member of the Frank Street Methodist Episcopal Church, and upon its disbandment, joined the First Methodist Church of Rochester. He was president of the Board of Trustees, a trustee of the Genesee Methodist Conference Corporation, and a trustee of the Blocher Home for the Aged in Williamsville. He was, for a time, a director of the Hahnemann Hospital, and was a member of the Board of the Rescue Mission. He was also a member of Corinthian Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons. He was a liberal contributor to many charitable and religious undertakings.
He fell on the steps of the Methodist Church just before services, fracturing his hip. He died the following morning at the Homeopathic Hospital in Rochester. He was living with his daughter at the time of his death. [ Obituary of C. L. Griffith, Rochester Democrat-Chronicle, 23 January 1923].1689

He was born on a farm outside Hickory Corners, and attended a one room school. At about age 8 he was very ill with pneumonia, and had a chest tube inserted. Shortly later the family lost the farm (he always thought it was because of the bills associated with his illness) and moved. By the time he was 14 years old they were living just north of Vicksburg, MI. Lester completed the 8th grade and left home, moving to Kalamazoo to work in the factories. At age 16 he lied about his age and started to work in the Kalamazoo Post Office, first as a carrier and later as a clerk. A fellow postal worker was dating Jenny DeYoung and fixed Lester up with her sister, Kate. For some reason Kate couldn't make it, and he ended up with Agnes.1991
