He was a theatrical manager, and a biographical sketch appears in "Who Was Who in America", Vol. 1. He was educated in Maine and Boston public schools. He began his career as an actor in 1871, with the Boston Museum Stock Company, and took curtain calls with such performers as William Warren, Charles Baron, and Annie Clarke. About 1876 he began managing road companies sent out by Eugene Tompkins. He became an acting manager for Lillie Langtry in the United States and Great Britain from 1888-1890, and continued in this field with Margaret Mather in 1892, and Minnie Maddern Fiske from 1893-1924. He was also organizer and librarian at the Poland Springs, ME library, and directed the Poland Springs Art Exhibition for twelve years. He was a proprietor of the Boston Atheneum. As an author, he wrote "The Brook", a popular stage comedy, "Maine's Hall of Fame", "The Man From Maine", "Mrs. Fiske, A Biographical Sketch", and published "The Mary Catherine Stories". He retired in 1930, and lived in Roxbury, MA before moving to Middleborough for the last four years of his life. He died there, at the home of Mrs. George Jones on Elm Street. His obituary appears in the "Middleboro Gazette of May 12, 1939.

He moved from Ontario to Michigan with his family when he was about 6 years old. There were apparently several siblings from his father's first marriage. Dean Griffith thinks that Judson's father's first wife died in childbirth. In 1935 Judson (Dean's grandfather) pointed out a woodlot on a farm near Kalamazoo and told Dean that he had several brothers and sisters buried there. Dean thinks that some of them died of scarlet fever and others from diphtheria.1507

Vermont's first millionaire, Silas made his money in lumbering and producing charcoal used in the flourishing steel mills in Danby and Dorset. The Silas Griffith Memorial Library in Danby is named for him. To this day, the children of Mt. Tabor and eastern Danby benefit from his monetary legacy with gifts at Christmastime sustained by a trust. His Victorian home in Danby has been restored to its earlier glory, now the Silas Griffith Inn. He owned much of the town of Mount Tabor which bore his Griffith name from 1891-1905, and one can still visit Griffith Lake there.1556

We know from the journal of Chauncy's cousin, John Marcellus Griffith, that they were close friends and went to Minnesota together in 1855-1858. Marcellus mentions seeing Chauncy in April 1858 when they are both in Mankato, and writes that he went up to Chauncy's and saw him, his wife, and her family where they had settled but never mentions him again. The 1860 Mankato census shows Martha Griffith 21, living with son Henry C. 2, at the home of her parents, Henry Fowler 46, and his wife Mary 45, and Martha's siblings Frederick 18, Henrietta 17, John G. 16, and Walter Fowler 15, all b. in England. At that time Chauncy apparently returned for a visit to his home in Mt. Tabor, Vt., for he is found in the 1860 census there. Chauncy is not heard from again, but is in the 1880 Federal Census, District 1, Columbia Co., Washington Territory with his family: Chauncy Griffith, 46, b. Vt.; Martha A., 40, b. Peleg (aka Pick and Pete) and John Marcellus Griffith owned a farm in California, and are together there in the 1860 Township #1, Amador Co. census, p. 465. But Peleg, 34, is back in Mt. Tabor, Vt., in 1870, a retail dry goods merchant, with wife (Latricia) Jane (Pearsons) 31, and son Theron P. Griffith 1. He is living in Danby in 1880, a beekeeper, with Jane, Theron, and two daughters, Winifred 7, and Josephine 6. He is in the Rutland Co. Business Directory 1881-1882, Apiarian. California must have drawn him back; Peleg and his wife are in National City, San Diego Co., Calif., in 1910. He is buried there. His son Theron and family are in San Diego in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses. Jane Griffith applied for a Civil War Widow's Pension 29 Oct 1918 that recorded Peleg's enlistment 19 Aug 1862 as Private in Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, Minn. He became Captain, and applied for Invalid Pension 3 Nov 1905 [US Civil War Pension record for Peleg T. Griffith, widow Griffith, L. A scholar, surveyor, and adventurer, Marley studied at Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester, Vt., and then traveled to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area of Minnesota and made the first official survey of many of the towns there including the Twin Cities. He returned home and then took a ship, the Northern Light, down the East Coast to Panama, walked across the Isthmus, and boarded another ship, the Orizaba, to San Francisco to the gold rush area of California, staking several claims and also performing the first official surveys of the area, including the original government survey of Amador County. He is found there, owning a farm, in the 1860 Amador Co., census, Township #1 with his cousin Peleg "Pete." He kept a journal covering the years 1852, starting when he was in school, through March 1869, when he returned to Danby from California, presumably for visit since he had the farm, vineyards, and land claims in Amador County.He married at Danby, Vt., Mary A. Kelley, 2 November 1869, and lived in East Dorset, VT., the rest of his life, buying a store there.1634

He was selectman of Dorset, judge of probate, thirty-eight years (Bennington Co. District Courthouse in Manchester, VT); member, Bennington County and Vermont Bar Associations; chairman, Battenkill Valley Chapter, American Red Cross; chairman, Manchester Salvation Army committee; charter member, Manchester Rotary Club; member and one of organizers, Manchester Board of Trade; clerk, treasurer, Village; director, Chamber of Commerce; president, Factory Point National Bank; trustee, Treasurer, Dellwood Cemetery Association; president, trustee, Southern Vermont Artists, Inc; and counsellor, Vermont Society of Mayflower Descendants.1639
After the death of Katharine Hope Griffith, mother of Tom, Mary Lou, and Katharine, Aunt "Matie" helped to raise the children, all living at the home of grandparents, John Marcellus and Mary Kelley Griffith. She did not marry until later in life when she married William Seward of Rutland Vermont. There was no issue from this marriage. Uncle Bill predeceased Matie who continued to live in Rutland until the last few years of her life when she lived in Beverly Manor Nursing Home in Rutland. She attended the Conservatory of Music in Boston and taught piano at Burr and Burton Seminary. She was an avid Boston Red Sox Fan.1649
He was a surveyor and civil engineer in Bennington County, and lived in Manchester Center. He was on War Ration Board and was the subject in one of Norman Rockwell's famous paintings. He went to the University of Vermont, and worked on the railroads before surveying. He was a selectman in Manchester, and the town's first town manager.
