She was born in New York as were both of her parents. In the 1900 Federal Census of the same place (ED 23 sh. 9), she is living with her son Alden. Here she is said to have been born in July 1819 in New York, with both her parents also born in New York.

[The following information from Alden Griffith and Ruana Jane Griffith, widow, Civil War Pension Application File SO 461,367 SC 433,078 WO unknown WC 285,753, Records of the Veterans Administration, Record Group 15, National Archives, Washington, D.C.]

The soldier Alden Griffith (surname often spelled "Greffett" in the pension file) enlisted 9 August 1862 at Jackson, MI, as a private in Capt. John Goldsmith's Co. G of the 17th Michigan Regiment of Volunteer Infantry, to serve for three years. At that time, he was 49 years old, 5 feet 11 inches in height, of light complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. He was a farmer. He states that he was born in Rashford (sic), NY [believed to be Rushford, Allegany Co., NY]. He suffered from rheumatism and chronic diarrhea and was not able to do duty as a soldier. He was discharged on 3 January 1863, after spending time at Weaverton Hospital near Harper's Ferry, VA, and at Mount Pleasant Hospital in Washington, D.C. He applied for a pension on 25 August 1882, at age 66, being a resident of Napoleon, MI, at that time. The same physical description is provided as above. He had resided in Jackson Co., MI, since his discharge. His signature is on the application. He received a pension per Certificate No. 433,078. He died at Napoleon on 15 May 1890, and his widow Ruana Jane (Whiting) Griffith, age 69, of Napoleon, applied for a widow's pension 19 May 1890. Her application states that they were married at Brooklyn, MI, 25 March 1849 by "one Carpenter a Justice of the Peace." Neither party had been previously married. [Jackson County marriage records p. 149 show that Alden Griffith Jr. of Napoleon and Ruana Whiting of same were married 25 March 1838 by C. C. Carpenterm J.P.] She signed the application, with Christian Allen and Mrs. Jane Van Slyke as witnesses. Christian Allen of Napoleon, MI, her son-in-law of 13 years, and R. D. Knowles of Jackson, MI, a personal acquaintance, testified that she was indeed Alden's widow. Another affidavit was given by Warren S. Moulton of Summit, Jackson Co., MI, who knew Alden and Ruana since their marriage; witnesses were Mrs. C. H. Elliott and Birt Van Slyke. They had no children under 16 years of age at that time. R. D. Knowles is identified in another document as her attorney. She received her widow's pension per Certificate No. 285,753. She died 11 January 1903.

The 1900 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Jackson Co., MI (ED 22 sh. 7) shows that she had born 11 children, 8 of which were living at that time. Her parents were both said to have been born in New York.

In 1850, a Clarissa Griffith, age 51, born New York, was living with Chauncey and Nancy Whiting (Federal Census Columbia Twp. Jackson Co. MI dw. 1409 fam. 1441). Could she be Nancy's mother?

He was a Civil War Veteran, having served in Company C of the 9th Michigan Infantry. The 1900 Federal Census of Hanover Twp., Jackson Co., MI (ED 5 sh. 10) shows that Calista had born 8 children only 3 of whom were still living. This census also indicates that Lot's father was born in Vermont and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. This is food for thought regarding the Racheuel (sic) Quigley, age 64 born Pennsylvania who was living with Alden and Ruana Griffith in 1860 in Napoleon Twp. (Federal Census p. 254).

Daniel lived in Mt. Tabor, VT, until 1824, then moved to Manchester, VT, and worked a farm belonging to his father-in-law. After about eight years he moved back to Manchester. In the fall of 1836 he traveled overland to Buffalo, then by steamboat to Detroit, then by team and wagon to Jackson County where he bought 160 acres in section 2 of Springport Township for $500. In the spring of 1837 preparations were made for the family to come to Michigan. The two older boys, Hosea and George, started ahead with a team of horses (Old Black and Sorrell) and wagon with a portion of the household goods and came to Buffalo where they were over taken by the rest of the family and outfit which had come by the Erie Canal. At Buffalo all was put aboard the steamboat and came up Lake Erie to Detroit. The remainder of the journey to Otter Creek, about 100 miles, was made by wagon. They arrived in Springport Twp. in June and moved into a log shanty. They lived there until a new log house was built across the road. The house that stands today was build in 1852. At that time none of the immense trees which covered the whole farm and nearly all the surrounding county had been cut down. Indians were frequent callers begging for salt and potatoes or selling maple sugar they had made. Daniel did much trading with the Indians. Deer, bears, wolves, and smaller game were plentiful to provide the family needs. Daniel was owner of the only team of horses in the twp. at that time. He broke the land after it was cleared with an ox team. He had to take the train to Detroit to buy flour and other supplies. The first crop of wheat was hauled 60 miles to Ann Arbor. He added to his homestead until there was an estate of 240 acres at the time of his death at the age of 75 years. In 1839 the Otter Creek post office was established with Daniel the Postmaster. Weekly mail was carried to and from Onondaga and Tompkins Center. He remained the Postmaster until his death. At that time his second son George T. was appointed Postmaster and held the office until its discontinuance in 1900. After Daniel's death his son George T. became owner of the old home place and after his death George C., son of Plyn, became its owner. George C. had lived with his uncle George T. since he was a small boy. Plyn died the year George C. was born. At the death of George C. his son George A. became the owner, and at his death his daughter Georgeana become the owner. Georgeana sold the old place sometime between 1960 and 1980.1024,1025,1026
