Records pertaining to the births in this family were found under "Griffeth" in the microfilm copy of the Vermont Vital Records transcript, at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston. In the birth records for Betsey and Obed, the mother's maiden name of "Boyden" is indicated. Elizabeth's age at death of 68 makes it probable that she was the sister of Mary Boyden who married Ellis' brother John Griffith, and that is what has been assumed herein.
Children of Ellis5 Griffith and Elizabeth Boyden all born at Dummerston, Windham Co., VT, were as follows:

Information on certain Griffiths of Summit Co., OH, has been included in this database. It is not proven that the Lot listed there is actually a son of the present subject, or, if so, that he is a son of Nancy Petee. The information has been entered primarily for convenience. RELATIONSHIP HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN.
Children of Lot5 Griffith and Nancy Petee were as follows:

Nathan, of Allegany Co., NY, purchased 40 acres of Federal Lnad in Section 10 Twp. 4 South, Range 1 East, in Columbia Twp., Michigan, on 9 Oct. 1837.
Some IGI Ohio records, which may or may not pertain to this Nathan, show a marriage to Susanna Headdy, 17 Feb 1818, and a marriage to Elizabeth Waldron, 26 May 1824, both in Butler County.
47. Alden5 Griffith (Ephraim4, Samuel3, William2, William1) was born circa 1776 at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA.425 He married Betsey Potter on 5 May 1805 at Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT.426 He married Clarissa (poss.) Swift circa 1817 at prob. New York. He died after 1840 at Jackson Co., MI.
The earliest primary reference to Alden is in Plymouth Co., MA, where, on 30 Nov 1801, he witnessed two deeds in which his parents, Ephraim and Mary, sold all interest in their property to their sons (Alden's brothers) Ephraim Jr. and Obed. No separate census record pertaining to Alden has been found prior to 1820, although it is speculated that he may have been living with his brother Lot and his family. In 1820, Alden's household is listed in Caneadea, Allegany Co., NY, (Federal Census p. 8) with the following members:
1 male 26-45 (assumed to be Alden)
1 female 16-26 (assumed to be Clarissa, his second? wife)
1 male under 10 (possibly Alden Jr.)
1 female under 10 (possibly Clarissa)
In 1830, Alden's household is listed in Haight, Allegany Co., NY, (Federal Census p. 121) with the following members:
1 male 50-60 (assumed to be Alden)

1 female 10-15 (possibly Jane)
1 male 5-10 (possibly Lot)
1 female 5-10 (unknown)
1 female under 5 (could be Mary, oldest child of Alden Jr.)
Information from the Bell Memorial Library in Nunda, NY, in the form of a photocopy of a page from a history of New Hudson, NY, apparently extracted from a published history of Allegany Co., p. 869 (unfortunately, they did not include a citation of the source) states that "New Hudson was set off from Rushford April 10, 1825. The town was first named Haight, ... in 1837 [the people] changed the name to New Hudson. The first town meeting was held ... May 3, 1825 , when were elected ... Alden Griffith, collector; ... Brown [unreadable], Alden Griffith, constables". [This would be consistent with Alden Griffith Jr.'s statement that he was born in Rushford ca. 1818 and with the 1830 Census that shows Alden Griffith a resident of Haight.]
Jackson Co., MI, Land records show that on 22 June 1836, Alden bought land in Columbia Twp., Sec. 9, and Napoleon Twp. Sec. 4 (3:194, 196)
Information on several Griffiths of Jackson Co., MI, has been included in this database. It is possible that these are NOT all children of the present subject. There is also no indication that the mother of any of these children was Betsey Potter. Nancy's death record gives her mother as Clara Swift, which suggests that she, at least, was Clarissa's daughter. The information has been entered here primarily for convenience. RELATIONSHIP HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN.
There were no children of Alden5 Griffith and Betsey Potter.
Children of Alden5 Griffith and Clarissa (poss.) Swift were as follows:

The link between John and the indicated parents is not definite, but seems probable, based on the fact that one of John's sons was named Clemons and one of his daughters Martha.

She was the ancestor of Richard M. Clarke, the source of information for this line. Sally died in Boston July 18, 1837 while visiting with family and friends. A diary written by son Asa tells of her attending a fireworks display the evening of the forth of July. The next day she took a chill, became ill and failed rapidly. (Son Rodolphus also says that a post mortem examination showed that her left lung had been gone probably 15 years). There being no telegraph in that era, the family in Conway did not know of the death until her body was delivered back to them, but Asa did not learn of his mother's death until after the funeral, he having been making a leisurely return from school in Castleton, Vt at the time. Son Roldolphus wrote more in his memoir: "Our mother was of a cheerful disposition and always a good companion for us all.We all loved her and as I was to care for her in my youthful days she seemed to be like a sister. I told her everything and she confided in me. Times were often hard, produce low and money very scarse, yet we always gained a little and we were a happy family. ....We men folk were haying nearly 3/4 of a mile from home and sister Aura was alone in the house at the time. A boy was sent to call us home. It was a sad time with all of us. The Whately minister came with the parties who came from Boston to break the sad news to the family. After arranging matters at home I went horseback to Ashfield (8 miles) to notify my grandmother and other friends along the way. The funeral was the next day. Quite a large number attended. It was a sad hour. I think everybody loved our Mother....a gifted woman much beloved in the community for her ability as a nurse. It will be remembered that was before the days of professional nursing and the women of the community helped each other in the illness of the family and the bearing of the children. Those women that were especially expert in their ministrations to the sick and in caring for the women in child birth were in great demand and usually gave their services freely, and with loving Christian zeal."444
