Generation Three

7. William3 Griffith (William2, William1) was born circa 1690. He married Suseanah (--?--) circa 1717. He died after 1726.

There are two deeds which I think pertain to him. On 2 March 1724, Jeremiah Leavitt sold 22 acres of land in Rochester to William Griffith Jr. (Plymouth County deeds, 18:221). On 13 April 1724, William Griffith Jr. sold part of this same land to Lazarus Randall (Plymouth County deeds, 21:11); this deed was confirmed by William on 20 April 1724. This is the last record I have found for this William.

Children of William3 Griffith and Suseanah (--?--) both born at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA, were as follows:

8. Stephen3 Griffith (William2, William1) was born circa 1693. He married Hannah Norcross, daughter of Richard Norcross and Hannah Sanderson, on 30 Apr 1720 at Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.28

That Stephen was the son of William Griffith, is established by two deeds dated 8 Aug. 1728, in which Stephen sells to Benjamin Hammond and to Joseph Burge property that Stephen bought of his "father" William Griffith (Plymouth County deeds, 23:114 and 25:35, respectively); in the second deed, Stephen's wife, Hannah, releases her dower rights in the property. He removed to Hardwick as early as 1735, and was selectman of that town in 1737. (Ref. History of Hardwick, by Paige).

Children of Stephen3 Griffith and Hannah Norcross were as follows:

9. Joseph3 Griffith (William2, William1) was born say 1695. He married Ann (Joanna) Landers, daughter of Thomas Landers and Deborah Freeman, circa 1724. He died after 1734.

By a deed of 4 Dec. 1730, William Griffith sold to Joseph Griffith one-eighth of one whole share of property in Rochester, being one-eighth of Joseph Lothrop's original share (Plymouth County deeds, 31:105). Joseph subsequently sold this property to Joseph Edwards, by deed of 22 April 1734 (Plymouth County deeds, 39:176), but neither deed specifically identifies a father-son relationship between William and Joseph. Joseph is, however, the only other Griffith to whom William sold a significant amount of property, leading one to suspect that Joseph was William's son also.

Children of Joseph3 Griffith and Ann (Joanna) Landers all born at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA, were as follows:

10. Samuel3 Griffith (William2, William1) was born circa 1700. He married Eleanor Estey, daughter of Joshua Estey and Abigail Stanley?, on 24 Sep 1723 at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA.39 He died after 1770.

That Samuel is a son of William is proved by a deed dated 7 Feb. 1748 (Plymouth Co. Deeds 46:135) whereby Samuel and Elinor deed to their son Damiel property which Samuel obtained from his father William Griffith. In another deed, dated 2 July 1753 (Plymouth Co. Deeds 56:62-63), Daniel, then of Freetown, deeds to Ephraim Griffith, then of Rochester, the same land, described as that which Daniel obtained from his "honoured father Samuel Griffeth", with some exceptions, one of which was that land contained in a deed by which his "hond grandfather William Griffeth" mortgaged to the Province Trustees. (See his father William for further detail.) In a deed of 12 July 1770 (Plymouth Co. Deeds 55:198), Samuel and Elinor deed other property to son Daniel, then of Oxford, proving that they were still living and of Rochester on that date.

Children of Samuel3 Griffith and Eleanor Estey all born at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA, were as follows:

11. Jesse3 Griffith (William2, William1) was born on 7 Jan 1711 at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA.55 He married Elizabeth Bent, daughter of Experience Bent and Abigail Sampson, on 4 Jan 1733 at Middleborough, Plymouth Co., MA.56 He married Sarah Russell, daughter of John Russell and Mercy Crooker, on 28 Jan 1745 at Pembroke ?, Plymouth Co., MA. He died after 1770, when he was at Wilmington, Windham Co., VT.57

In a deed dated 21 June 1734 , and acknowledged 29 June 1734 (Plymouth County deeds, 29:76), William Griffith of Middleborough sold for £300 to his "son" Jesse Griffith of same, the farm and other land which he bought of William Short by deed of 3 June 1734, reserving to himself and Mary his wife the use and improvement of one half of the property during either or both of their natural lives. This is followed by an agreement dated 23 July 1734, whereby Mary Griffith of Middleborough, widow, voids a bond of £100 [presumably equivalent to her widow's dower] of that date, by her "loving son" Jesse Griffith of Middleborough, for good and sufficient meat, drink, washing, and lodging in sickness and in health, and gives up all rights in the property sold to Jesse by her late husband William Griffith.

Children of Jesse3 Griffith and Elizabeth Bent all born at Middleborough, Plymouth Co., MA, were as follows:

Children of Stephen3 Griffith and Phebe Merrick were as follows:

14. Lazarus3 Griffith (Stephen2, William1) was born on 7 Jun 1708 at Harwich, Barnstable Co., MA.93 He married Lydia Doane on 30 Sep 1731 at Eastham, Barnstable Co., MA.

He removed to Middle Haddam or Middletown, CT, c. 1747; in the Harwich Church records, the wife of Lazarus Griffith was dismissed to the church in Middle Haddam, 12 Aug. 1747 (The Mayflower Descendant, 8:247).

Children of Lazarus3 Griffith and Lydia Doane were as follows:

15. Barnabas3 Griffith (Stephen2, William1) was born on 21 Nov 1710 at Harwich, Barnstable Co., MA.103 He married Hannah Hopkins on 5 Nov 1745 at Harwich, Barnstable Co., MA.104 He died on 8 May 1776. He was buried at Brewster, Barnstable Co., MA.

Children of Barnabas3 Griffith and Hannah Hopkins were as follows:

16. John3 Griffith (Philip2, William1) married Abigail Ladd on 16 Oct 1743 at Charlestown, Washington Co., RI.110 He died after 1777, at which time he was at Richmond, Washington Co., RI.111

They were still of Rochester, when they executed a deed of 7 Nov. 1770, in which they sold their interest in Jabez Hiller's estate (Plymouth Co. deeds 58:202).

Children of Aaron3 Griffith and Elizabeth Hiller all born at Rochester, Plymouth Co., MA, were as follows:

His parentage is proved by Plymouth County deeds 36:24, dated 13 Dec. 1742, in which Jeremiah and Mary Griffith, give land to their "son James" for "love and affection." Danby VT Hist. p. 150 says that they came to Danby in 1782, and also had four daughters.

Children of James3 Griffith and Experience Claghorn were:
