Mennonites,p41.145-146)(Menn. of Wash.
Co., MD Con. & Franklin Co., PA by
DRL, p71,72)Jacob had moved to
Eastern OH about 1820 with his parents. (The
Yellow Creek Mennonites, p145,146)
Mary and Jacob were 19 years of age when
they married and they had seven children.
In 1833, Jacob was ordained by Bishop
Jacob Nold at the Midway Meetinghouse of
Mahoning Co.,OH for the
Columbiana-Mahoning Mennonite
congregations. (Pennsylvania
Mennonite Heritage, vIII,#4,Oct. 1980) Jacob
was a farmer by trade, and went into the
threshing business of which some of his
members didn't like. At this point he
decided to move to NW of the later Yellow
Creek Meeting house on C.R. 36 (now) of
Harrison Twp., Elkhart Co.,IN in the
spring of 1848 where land was cheaper. In
the first Mennonite Church service that
was held in Elkhart Co., IN, Jacob had
the main sermon which was preached in
German. Jacob was ordained Bishop in 1851
. He was the first active bishop in IN.
He was known as a good-hearted and
earnest christian. Later, as a result of
some younger men wanting to bring newer
ideas into the church, he organized the
Old Order Mennonites which is also called
the Wisler Mennonites. (The
Record of the Old Yellow Creek Cem.,
Entry 220) 2Catharine Knopp E 1819-d11/19/1888
of Eastern OH. Catharine was the
housekeeper for Jacob and Mary before
Mary died. Burial: East Old Yellow Creek
Cem., Row. 10 (The Record of the Old
Yellow Creek Cem., Entry 218) Jacob
did not care for evening meetings, Sunday
Schools, or bass singing, but stayed to
the way he was raised in Bucks Co.,PA.
The services were sung with the old
German hymns without parts...just the
melody. Services were held in German
every two weeks in the forenoon. The
Yellow Creek Mennonites, p146) It
made contention when a new ministers
moved into the area and wanted to add new
programs and evangelistic preaching more
like the Methodists. Jacob was made
Overseer of the Yellow Creek District of
about 450 members. Jacob was also one of
the preachers that took turns preaching
services in the schoolhouse every four
weeks for the Mennonite families that had
settled in Locke and Union Twps in the
vicinity of the Culp Schoolhouse [1 1/2
miles NE of where Nappanee now is.]. (The
Yellow Creek Mennonites, p112) He
contributed to the 1875 building fund for
the Holdeman congregation in 1875 where
several congregations contributed. (The
Yellow Creek Mennonites, p72) Burial:

Notes: The original town of
Foraker was named after Senator
Joseph B. Foraker of Harding Co.,
Ohio and located on the land of
Samuel Yoder, which was located 1
mile east and 1 mile south of the
present Foraker. The
Chicago and Canada Southern
Railway bought land from Samuel
Yoder & Jonas Kauffman in
1872. Work was
started on the Wabash
Railroad in 1891. In
1893, Samuel and Jonas died,
never seeing a train come through
Foraker. The railroad did
not want to put the station at
Foraker, but a mile west and
north, so it was decided to move
the town. The new town of
Foraker was also built on land of
Samuel Yoder once inhabited with
frogs the greater portion of the
summer season. The old
Foraker consisted of one store,
which was built and operated by
Noah Yoder, son of Samuel
Yoder. In the spring of
1893, Noah moved his store on a
pair of skids and with the use of
horses from Old Foraker to the
new Foraker and Noah Kauffman
then took charge of the store and
run it for some time. (Source:

door through the walls
between the buildings and
throwing both rooms into
one store. When
Yoder sold out, the door
was blocked up and became
two stores again.
There were living
quarters above the store
but we don't know if Noah
ever lived there.
Solomon Miller and Noah
Yoder were the main stays
at Foraker in its early
history. Solomon
and Noah erected a
building just south of
the little old harness
shop and after its
completion, they put in a
stock of buggies and
wagons. Later, the
building was made into a
church. Another
friend of Noah's, John
Detwiler, had a
blacksmith shop just
north of the railroad
tracks on the west side
of Main Street.
Detwiler also put up the
first dwelling house
which ended up being the
third house east of the
depot. John
Detwiler and John Blenis
put up a cider mill next
to the blacksmith shop
and did an enormous
business. Later,
they sold the business to
Noah Yoder who run the
cider mill two seasons
and then sold out to
George Wernitz, who moved
the mill. Noah
Yoder, John Detwiler,
Emmanuel Kime, Lorento
Kime, Earl Mishler, and
Clarence Mishler then
moved to Kempster,
Wisconsin. (Sources:

fond husband and six children, and a
large concourse of relatives and friends
followed her to the grave. She suffered
much during her sickness, which she bore
with patience and resignation; though at
times her mind was much bewildered, she
still seemed to have a firm reliance on
God and a well-grounded hope. It was my
privilege to visit her during her
illness, but found her so feeble that it
was thought she could not be spoken to
with profit. She recognized me and seemed
glad to see me, and after I had bid her
farewell and left the room, she called
for me again, desiring to hear words of
admonition. Her funeral sermon was
preached by J. M. Christophel, Daniel
Brundage, and the writer, from Isa 38:17.

Christophel - Anna, wife of
Bishop J. W. Christophel, was
born in Elkhart Co., Ind., Oct.
15, 1859; died Aug. 25, 1936;
aged 76 y. 10 m. 10 d. On Jan.
18, 1885 she was united in
marriage to Jacob W. Christophel.
To this union were born 3
children: Elizabeth (Mrs. Leander
Weldy of Goshen, Ind.), Elmer,
living at home; and Allen B., who
preceded her in death four years
ago. She also leaves 3
grandchildren (Mrs. Frances
Christophel Stauffer and Warren
Christophel, at the home, and
Verna Mae Weldy of Goshen). One
granddaughter (Mildred Weldy)
preceded her in death. She leaves
1 sister (Mrs. B. L. Weaver of
Salem, Ohio) and 3 brothers
(Michael S. Hoover of Nappanee,
Ind.; David M. Hoover of Elkhart,
Ind.; and Ezra M. Hoover of New
Paris, Ind.). She lived all her
life in the vicinity of her birth
and for 45 years lived in the
home where she died. She united
with the Yellow Creek Mennonite
Church about 55 years ago and for
43 years shared with her husband
the duties of a minister and the
last 18 years the additional
duties which fall to the bishop's
wife. She had been ill for about
eight weeks but was bedfast only
ten days. During these days of
distress she was patient in her
suffering, very considerate of
those who cared for her, and was
fully resigned to the course that
lay before her. She was a loving
wife, a kind mother, and will be
missed by her many friends and
acquaintances. To those who knew
her best she was an unselfish
friend who was more interested in
the welfare of others than of her
own, truly exemplifying the truth
expressed in the motto
"Others." Funeral
services were conducted at the
home by Jonas Loucks and at the
Church by A. L. Buzzard, S. C.

W., son of John and Elizabeth
(Reed) Christophel, was born July
23, 1856, near Wakarusa, Ind.
About 53 years ago he was
converted, united with the
Mennonite Church, and became a
member of the Yellow Creek
Congregation. On Jan. 18, 1885 he
was united in marriage to Anna
Hoover of Elkhart Co., Ind. To
this union 8 children were born:
Elizabeth (Mrs. Leander Weldy) of
Goshen, Elmer H. (living at home)
and Allen B., who preceded him in
death. On Jan. 11, 1893, he was
called to the ministry by his
home congregation which he served
until called home. In 1918 he was
called to the office of bishop,
and was given the oversight of
the Nappanee, Salem, and Yellow
Creek congregations. As a
minister and as a bishop he
always endeavored to render the
best possible service to the
brotherhood under his care. His
constant desire was to labor as a
servant rather than as one
exercising authority, with the
thought that obedience should be
rendered because of faithful
teaching and understanding of the
Word rather than because of harsh
discipline, desiring that the
Church might prosper and become
more God-like. It was often said
of Bro. Christophel. that when
some one came to him for advice
the person always was given
something helpful and worth
while. His chief concern and
burden was the welfare of the
churches in his charge, and he
labored to the end that they
might prosper and live in peace.
He was a kind and loving father
and will be greatly missed by his
many friends and acquaintances.
Only those who knew him best
could understand his burdens and
sorrows, as he devotedly and
unselfishly labored for the unity
and welfare of the church and
community. After an illness of
but a few days duration he
peacefully fell to sleep Jan. 11,
1937; aged 80 y. 5 m.19 d. His
companion preceded him Aug. 25,
1936. He leaves his daughter
(Elizabeth), a son (Elmer), 3
grandchildren and 3 sisters (Mrs.
Hanna Smith, Mrs. Harriet
Blosser, and Sarah Christophel),

the 12th of October, in Elkhart county,
Ind., of palsy, Pre. Christian
Christophel, aged 63 years, 7 months and
26 days. Bro. Christophel was born on the
16th of Feb. 1820, in Westmoreland
county, Pa. He came to Ohio in 1835 and
was married to Anna Hoover, in Mahoning
county, on the 17th of April 1845. He
removed from the last named place to
Harrison township, Elkhart county, Ind.,
in 1848, where he resided to the time of
his death. He united with the Mennonite
Church in early life and about 11 years
ago was ordained to the ministry and was
a faithful laborer in the vineyard of the
Lord. His earnest admonitions and his
devoted zeal in the cause of Christ and
his Church, will be longed remembered. He
will be greatly missed not only in his
home but also in his neighborhood and in
the Church. On Saturday afternoon, the
6th of October, though somewhat
indisposed, he attended the examination
meeting at his Church, about a mile from
his residence. After his return home he
sat down with his family to the supper
table to take the customary evening meal,
lifting his heart in prayer and
thanksgiving to God for the tender
mercies of His hands, after which when
about to partake of the bounties which a
heavenly Father had bestowed, his hand
suddenly lost its strength, his tongue
became speechless, his mind unconscious
and his whole right side was palsied, and
in this condition, without being able to
speak or recognize any one, he lay for
six days, when death relieved him of all
his sufferings; but we need not mourn as
those who have not hope, believing that
our loss was his eternal gain. He was
buried on the 15th. An immense concourse
of people followed the remains to their
last resting place at Yellow Creek
Meeting-house, where services were held
by Jacob A. Beutler from Luke 2:29, and
John F. Funk and Martin Hoover from
Numbers 23:10 last clause; a kind husband
and father, a good neighbor, a faithful
minister and sincere Christian has been
called from the toils of this sinful
world, and our prayer is that He may
comfort the sorrowing household, and
raise up another laborer to fill the
vacant place in the Church. (Herald
of Truth, November 1, 1883, pages 332,
333) - CHRISTOPHEL - On the 11th of
May, in Elkhart county, Ind., of
apoplexy, Anna, Widow of the late Pre.
Christian Christophel, of the yellow
Creek church, aged 64 years, 10 months 27
days. She was a daughter of David and
Esther Huber, and was born in Franklin
Co., Pa., on the 14th of June 1823. She
was baptized in the Mennonite church, by
Abraham Rohrer, in Columbiana Co., Ohio,
on the 14th of October 1843. She was
married to her late husband, in April
1845, with whom she removed to Elkhart
Co., Ind., in 1847. She was the mother of
seven children, six of whom survive her.
She was taken with apoplexy on the
morning of the 10th and died the
following day. She was buried on the
15th. Services by Henry Shaum from Phil.
1:21-23 and John F. Funk from 2 Tim.
4:6-8. Sister Christophel was a longing
to depart and be with Christ which is far
better. When her sister said to her,
"Do you not think you are near your
dying hour? She replied: It would be well
if I were." Peace to her ashes. (Herald
