(Picture

Baptist Church, 1939,
sometimes called
"Vining Baptist
Church")Jared & Salmon Vining were Pioneer of District (Article in Canadian Baptist in 1913) The Vining Cemetery & the Vining Baptist Church, located on the corner of Concession 5 and the Thorndale side road, received the name from the Vining family who settled in the district in 1822, and who were prominently associated with the early life of the Baptist Church in Western Ontario. The first interment made on the Vining Cemetery was that of Joseph Vining, son of pioneer Elder Salmon Vining who died March 1855 at the age of 16 years and six months, a victim of Typhoid Fever, which was prevalent in the district at that time. The Vining brothers, Jared & Salmon with their wives, who were the daughters of Captain Bodwell, came to West Nissouri in 1822. They were the sons of Ebenezer Vining, a Baptist minister who had charges in the states of New York & Massachusetts and were descendants of two brothers who in the early part of the 17th century left Wincanton, Somersetshire, England and sailed for America.
Jared & Salmon Vining worked side by side in hewing out homes for themselves in West Nissouri and in promoting the welfare of the community. Jared Vining was a tall and commanding in appearance and attracted the attention of all with whom he came in contact. Salmon Vining was a member of the West Nissouri Twp. Council and in this capacity devoted much of his time and effort to the building of good roads throughout the Twp., for which he received no remuneration. He did not neglect his home and on his farm was a small nursery where fruit trees were grown from seed.
Salmon Vining also did missionary work in many parts of Western Ontario, traveling hundreds of miles on horseback. Traveling missionaries sent out by the American Missionary Society held meetings in the Vining neighborhood. Elders Crandall and French, who recognized the oratorical ability of Salmon Vining and also his wide knowledge of the scriptures, urged him to enter the ministry. A service was later held in a barn on the Vining farm and Salmon Vining was ordained as an Elder. He had four appointments in the East and West Nissouri Twps. He organized the West Nissouri Chapel 74 years ago. Elder Vining performed marriage ceremonies in the Counties of Lambton, Middlesex, Oxford, and Perth. A book in which all the marriages solimnized by the Rev. Salmon Vining from 1833 - 1844 are recorded, is the possession of a granddaughter of the pioneer.
In this book of nearly a century ago are found records of scores of marriages in tghe pioneer settlements. Another valuable book owned by this pioneer Baptist clergyman, and now in the possession of a relative is a large commentary on the New Testament, edited by Thomas Scott, D.D. and published in 1818 by William Woodward in Philadelphia. In this book are recorded the birthdates of the early settlers.
Rev. Salmon Vining, who was born on Sept. 17, 1791 died in 1879. Jared Vining, brother of Rev. Salmon Vining, who was born in 1789 and died in 1858, was a deacon in the Baptist Church and assisted in the establishment of the Vining Baptist Church in West Nissouri Twp. Prior to the errection of the Baptist Church, services were held in the log schoolhouse on the corner. A singing school was also conducted in this building and the Vining brothers were ever ready to promote the educational interest of the community.
Rev. Andrew J. Vining, formerly of London and prominent clergyman of the Baptist Church, was the grandson of the pioneer missionary Rev. Salmon Vining. (The West Nissouri Baptist Church has long disappeared)
Another
article: THE VINING
FAMILY
Among the early settlers
of Nissouri were the
Vinings - two brothers,
Jared and Zalmon. These
two brothers, like the
Scatcherds, settled on
adjoining farms. They
came from New York State,
U. S. Zalmon was a
soldier in the war of
1812 and for his services
in that war, drew from
the United States
Government lands, located
in Michigan, not many
years ago.
Notwithstanding this soon
after the war they
preferred settling in
Canada to their own
country. They were sons
of a Baptist minister.
They both married sisters
of the late Captain
Bodwell, of Dereham. Both
they and their wives were
of more than ordinary
talents. A few years
after their settling in
Nissouri two
missionaries, Elders
Maybee and French, were
sent to labor in Nissouri
by the Christian ladies
of the Baptist church in
Oxford, who, having no
money, paid them with
coats, socks, and other
home-made clothing. The
labors of these
missionaries were not
vain for the word was
blessed and many were
awakened and converted
and among the converts
were Vinings. Though the
Christian ladies and the
missionaries are long
since gone the way of all
the earth, yet
"Blessed are the
dead which die in the
Lord for they rest from
their labors and their
works do follow
them." A Baptist
church was formed in the
Vining neighborhood and
these brothers were
leading spirits in it.
The elder brother Jared
became the Deacon and
Zalmon soon became the
minister; he was of more
than ordinary talent for
preaching. This church
has had its difficulties
like all other churches.
Though these brothers
have passed away to their
reward, there still
remains a Baptist
congregation in that
locality with a fine
brick church; many of the
children and
grandchildren of the two
Vining brothers are
members of it. -- Hal
