McAuly, I remember this picture also from the collection of Carrie Johnson, and
she showed me this picture many times and told me that they did not know the
depth of this lake. The men had let down measuring tools many times and
they could not find bottom and at one time I knew who the other man in the
picture was. Several of the families lived within view of the lake.)

Reason Why You Should Settle
Here - Town of Hutchins, Shawano County, WI (Taken From Book of WI Timber & Land Co.) Because
there is no healthier climate in the world. There are no
blizzards, cyclones, malaria or hay fever. The winters are
moderate and the summers cool. Because there are plenty of clear
streams and lakes abounding with fish. Because there is building
stone in abundance, and plenty of lumber close at hand and cheap.
Because the soil is clay loam, easily worked and very productive.
There is no cheap sand land. Because there are fewer crop
failures in this section than anywhere in America. Because there
is fine pasture and rich feed, to make rich milk. Because the
demand for dairy products is ten times greater than the supply.
Because we have good schools, both graded and un-graded. Because
we have churches of all the leading denominations. Because we have
several civic societies and fraternal orders. Because you will
have good, law-abiding neighbors, willing to help you get started
- as we will. Because the taxes are low. Because the title to you
land is perfect. Because our system permits of families being
located in groups. We will reserve land for your absent relatives
for a certain time, so that when they come, you can all live near
each other, or together. Because the progressive town of Mattoon
with its 1500 people is near our lands. Because hundreds of
prosperous farmers who bought land of us will give you the
benefit of their experience. Because there is work for everybody.
We employ 300 men in our mills and factories at Mattoon,
manufacturing lumber and veneers. Because the railroad is within
one to five miles of your farm. Because there is an up-to-date
power station supplying current for electric light. Also a fine
telephone system. Because there is a fine roomy hospital and the
best of medical attendance. Also experienced physicians having
independent practices. Because the land is so cheap and so
productive that you can make it pay for itself before your last
payments are due. What the Land Costs For any
portion of 10,000 choice, selected acres, unimproved, we charge
from $10 to $20 an acre, according to location. The land is
uniform in quality everywhere, its location being the only reason
for the variation in price. The excellent roads will make this of
little consequence to many. To a young man and his family, we
advise the purchase of forty acres at first, this being large
enough on which to make a good living. Larger tracts will be sold
to those desiring to engage in farming on a bigger scale. We give
you time in payment for the land, at a low rate of interest.
Remember, that if you buy, your railroad fare is refunded to you.
The title is perfect. Printed abstracts of title, with the
written opinion of a good lawyer, together with a certificate
that all taxes have been paid up to time of purchase are given
every buyer. Improved Lands. At our own expense we have
put into cultivation in crops about 500 acres, and we are
constantly enlarging this tract, knowing that some buyers will
want improved lands. If desired we will sell forty and eighty
acres of this land to individuals at a price to be agreed upon,
depending somewhat on the buildings now standing thereon. We can
sell you lands from one to ten miles from the town of Mattoon.
When you come to inspect the property you will be taken in hand
by the owners, and everything will be done to make you acquainted
with the country and its hospitable people. There is a hotel in
Mattoon which accommodates 200 guests. The rates are moderate,
and should you and several of your neighbors decided to come
together, you will find ample accommodations. In cases where the
person interested cannot be present, a selection will, if
desired, be made for him. He will expect a personal guarantee
with the land as we have represented it, and this we are willing
to give. To do this for him, we must know what his means are, how
much land he wishes to purchase, the size of his family, and
whether or not he intends to purchase more land, whether he
desires land perfectly level or rolling, and how far he would be
willing to locate from town.

Chicago for a brief time. In 1882, she moved to
the town of Hutchins, south of Mattoon. She was
one of the first settlers. - On July 10, 1889,
Per Johnson bought land in the Twp of Hutchins,
Shawano County, WI through the Homestead Act,
Land Office at Menasha, WI, and these were signed
by President of the United States, Benjamin
Harrison. - On the Hutchins Twp., Shawano Co.,WI
1900 Census, Peter was a farmer, and he and his
wife Elna, lived together with their children,
Hilda, John, Walter, & Selma. -Elna's funeral
was held at the Elim Church of the Luthern

Wolverine Rd., and the church still stands
there). Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery, E Dr., near
pump. Comments: Elna Marie Johnson had a stroke.
Grandma Carrie Johnson, her daughter-in-law,
saved this wheelchair in her attic during her
lifetime. It had a foothold to slide your foot in
to, and it was used for steering. After Elna's
death, Peter came to live with John & Carrie.
Peter & John always talked in Swedish. Peter
& Elna had owned the farm on the right side
of Wolverine Road behind theElim Church of the
Luthern Brethern (farm is no longer) and Charlie
Swanson owned the farm across from the Bottomless
Lake called Cramberry Lake (Source: 1952
Platt Book). Take Red River Road to the west
off of County D past Bakers Lake. A couple miles
further west. For some reason of which no one is
sure, the two families decided to trade farms.
Note: Elna & her sister, Mary, married Peter
and his cousin, James. Peter's son, John, and
James son, Charles married sisters, Carrie &
Anna Swanson, who were their cousins. Peter loved
Gladys's (my mother) long hair. One day, about
the age of 12, she went to town and had her hair
cut. When she came home, her Grandpa Peter cried.
Note: Elna & her sister, Mary, married

Walter Johnson is their Boarder, age 39 and working as a farm laborer. - Bur: Woodlawn Cemetery Hilda & Iver were well thought of in the community. (Obit) - Hilda was Carrie Johnson's mentor when Carrie lost her own mother (Hulda Swanson) at 12 years of age, and later her father and baby brother (John & Emil Swanson). Hilda was always there for her. - Hilda was a favorite aunt of my mother Gladys. Grandma Johnson made lace on the bottom of all her girls slips. After church one Sunday my mother went to play on the swing. Aunt Hilda told her she shouldn't, didn't she know how much work went into making that slip by her mother. And Grandma Johnson said, No, she doesn't know, I have never told her. - As a child, one Halloween night, myself along with my older girl cousins went Trick-or-Treating to Iver & Hilda's. We were given a great welcome, and we had to go in and show off our customes (attic clothes). That was my first time going out and I was probably about 10 years old.-Karolyn Roberts - Members of the Matton Nazarene Church. Comments: John came over on the
boat with his parents from Sweden
when he was two years old. On
this trip, he got so sick that he
almost died. While playing, he
tried to climb out a porthole and
was almost all the way through
when someone saw him and
retrieved him just before he was
completely out. Lived in Chicago
for two years with his parents,
then moved to Town of Hutchins,
Shawano Co., WI. On the 1900
Census for Hutchins Twp. of
Shawano Co., WI, John is listed
as a farmhand and living with his
parents and siblings. John was
bi-lingual (Swedish-English), but
never taught the Swedish language
to his children. Occupation:
Farmer. Cousins (Charlie Johnson,
John Johnson) married sisters
(Annie & Carrie Swanson), who
were also their first cousins.
- Grandma & Grandpa lived on Cranberry Road
across from Cranberry Lake (no roads back there
anymore) close to the west end, Zicks, and
Charlie Johnson also lived out there at the end,
but Grandpa & Grandma lost their farm during the
depression. They then moved further east
on Cranberry road and lived for a sort while.
Then they moved east of County Road D onto Gold
Creek Road and lived on the Joe Eibenholz place
for several years. Then later, they moved
onto the Larson place on E Cherry Road and lived
for several years, and when Grandpa died, then
Leonard, the youngest son, took over the farm in
his name. The children attended the
Nazarene Church which was on County Road D. - At
one time they were involved in the little
Swedish Church on D, and Norwegian traveling
pastors from Minneapolis held services there
when they could. -
Approximately three weeks before Grandpa died,
he and Grandma visited our home on a Sunday.
Everyone left the living room for the kitchen
but Grandpa. He stayed in the large living room
chair with his Sunday funnies, and I was
standing in the doorway to the kitchen. He
would lift the paper up to hide his face and
then peek out at me, doing this several times.
I loved it! - Karolyn Roberts - The day before
Grandpa died, he had been out hunting with the
menfolk, felt ill toward the end of the day and
the next morning he had his heart attack and
died instantly. He had shot a large white
owl the day before and someone had shot a jack
rabbit. Karolyn Roberts - The
grandaughters stayed with Grandma taking turns
for several days at a time. This way
Grandma was never alone in case she needed help
and each one of us prepared the meals
under her supervision and swept the kitchen
floor after every meal.- Every day Grandma read
her Bible always right after lunch. Every
three weeks she made a trip to the Dr. She
made out a grocery list every week for someone
to get for her. At Christmas time she
usually made it to the Nazarene Church Christmas
Program to watch the grandkids, and some that
lived to far away to go to church there
sometimes showed up to the programs. At
one time, that is where the whole family
attended. It was the one place she could
catch the most grandchildren at one time. On
occassion after a Dr.'s appointment, you saw her
standing outside a store or just inside a store
waiting for her ride to finish their shopping,
but usually she waited in the car.-Karolyn (Picture

Dr. Partridge didn't think he was very sick and sent him home. He kept on crying, so they took him to Dr. McKenna in Antigo. Dr. McKenna said he couldn't eat much because his tongue needed to be loosed, so he cut it. He kept on crying, so they took him to Mrs. Schawantz, the Mattoon Hospital where he died. While I was home on vacation one time, my
mother & I decided to visit Uncle Earl &
Aunt Florence. When we drove up, we
spotted them out inside of the fence trying
to keep the cows back as they had broke the
fence. They were not going to get the
job done as some of the cows had already
passed by them, and it certainly looked like
they could get hurt. I drove the car
across the lawn in front of the cows and
jumped out and started running towards them
flailing my arms and all the while my mother
was yelling at me protesting, being sure I
was going to get stampeded. However,
all of a sudden they turned and went back
through the opening and we got it closed
off. Uncle Earl expressed amazement at
a city girl as he called me, driving his
cows back through the fence when they
couldn't control them. That day he
decided the cows had to go, he couldn't
handle them anymore.-Karolyn - I have
precious memories of Aunt Florence's sister,

always seek me out to talk. What a
gentile lady-Karolyn.

Duane's face was cut bad. At that time they lived on Cranberry Rd. (Rena Johnson McAuly) - One year on a holiday, [I think Mom was in the hospital] I went to spend the day at Aunt Helen's. All of the relatives had gathered, but I think the men folk had went hunting. Anyway, the ladies decided they needed something from the little gas station at the foot of the hill in Mattoon as she carried a few groceries also. They needed it to make whatever, and I was elected to go as they didn't have a car there, the men had them. I could take Maynard's bicycle and I was game. After I left, Aunt Helen remembered the brakes didn't work and the tire had a bulge in it and could blow. They were scared and didn't think I would survive the hill, but they had no way of getting to me quick enough. So they waited. Let me tell you, that was some ride! But I kept my balance and came back with the merchandise. They were very happy to see me.-Karolyn Roberts
JJ1231 -
Duane A. Blodgett b11/29/1934
Janesville,WI - d8/13/1948 Uncle Ed's farm,
Langlade,WI - Duane & Uncle Leonard Johnson
was baling hay in the morning and when they
finished, they took the tractor & baler
(Duane driving & Leonard riding the baler)
over to the road that heads north towards
the farm of Edwin Johnson. This road
was just west of Uncle Ed's house.
When they reached County Road D, Duane
stopped at the stop sign, stood up on the
tractor and leaned forward to be able to see
both ways down the road. No one was
coming, so he turned right onto D and then
left into Uncle Ed's place. (Ed's
place is located halfway between Antigo and
Mattoon on County Road D) Ed asked Leonard
to make some adjustments on a piece of
machinery, so they could start baling.
Leonard asked Ed if his horses were rider
safe, could Duane ride one while he was
waiting. Ed said no problem, go ahead.
So Duane got up on the horse while it stood
still and started riding him. He came
past where Leonard was working and at that
moment the adjustment Leonard was making
made a loud squeaking noise, and Duane
comment to Leonard as he passed "The horse
shied a little." When he got past and
out into the filed, the horse started
rearing in an effort to get Duane off.
Leonard yelled to Duane to jump off.
He said Duane acted stunned or had fainted,
and didn't move, and then he fell off,
catching his foot in the harness, which
dragged him under the horse. George
Wolf (waiting to help with the baling) ran
out to the field to Duane, and he took his
last breath in Uncle George's arms as he
lifted him up. Uncle Leonard said he
could not go out to Duane. They had
been so very close. The back of
Duane's head was crushed, and his chest was
crushed. His mother never knew all
this. - In the spring, Duane had had
pneumonia, and he almost died. Also,
when younger the family had had an
automobile accident, and Duane had face
scars from the glass. The accident
happened on a county crossroads SW of
Mattoon. My mother had shown me the
corner several times. It was thought
that he might go blind when he got older.
- Harley Amerson took this same horse later
out into a nearby woods that he owned on the
other side of where Duane had turned onto D
to do some logging. The horse tried to
pin him against a tree. - As related to my
by Uncle Leonard, Karolyn. - Duane was
given permission to try out my Dad's cornet
and I sat down by him on the couch, and I
tried to take it from him to try it out too.
I ended up putting a dent in it.-Karolyn

Darlene Close & husband, Joe Zoern lived
in Union Grove, WI and spent time with
them also. We did many things with
their sons. I also spent a
previous summer babysitting near
Kansasville for a friend of Aunt
Laverne's.-Karolyn

Town of Hutchins,Shawano,WI - Buried by Peter & Elna Johnson's Stone, to the north (No marker) - She was buried elsewhere and had to be moved, but the person that did it said there was nothing but a couple of bones and he took some dirt also. Grandma begged my mother to go and look at her sister in the casket set up in their living room, but Mother being a child, wouldn't go. Later, she wished she would have gone.-Karolyn
