When used as a noun, "Wabash" refers to the railroad of folksong fame -- The Wabash Cannonball -- a mythical train that will take a hobo anywhere he wants to go with only his effort to climb aboard as traveling fair. When used as a verb, as in "Wabashing a block of freight cars," it means to handle roughly. I am not sure the crews of that railroad really deserve this label, but railroaders all over the country use the term that way. Wabashing is rare on the Milwaukee, but we caught a patrol in the act -- with a Wabash car no less! |
