Hopping a freight train and finding yourself set out on a sidetrack along the main line is bad enough -- now just imagine you were riding an empty car that is reserved for "hide service." The smelliest, messiest, most offensive commodity on a railroad is the hides from slaughterhouses that are sent to tanneries. Railroads set aside their oldest boxcars that are in the worst condition for this job -- once you load a car with hides, you will never want to put anything else in it again. These 2 unlucky "knights of the road" were not only left in the middle of nowhere, but they endured the most terrible conditions to get there! |
