WHITE-TAILED DEER

The White-tailed Deer are the most abundant hoofed mammals in North America. Viewing is best at dusk or dawn during feeding. During the day, the deer take cover to rest and digest their food.

The White-tailed Deer fawns are born in late May to early June and weigh between 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 pounds. The spotted coat of the fawn allows it to blend into the forest floor while the mother feeds. She stays close by in order to feed the young and hear it's call. The fawn is able to walk about 20 minutes after birth, but it will take two to three weeks before it can follow the mother as she feeds. By the time the fawn is a week old, it can easily outrun a man.
